About SC Linac

The accelerating structure for the superconducting linac booster for the 15 UD Pelletron at IUAC is a Niobium Quarter Wave Resonator, designed and fabricated as a joint collaboration between IUAC and ANL, USA. Booster accelerator consists of three linac modules, a superbuncher, and a rebuncher. Each module will house eight resonators and a 8 Tesla superconducting solenoid magnet. Three modules put together will provide ion beams upto mass 80 above Coulomb barrier.

RF superconducting Niobium quarter wave coaxial line resonators are optimized for accelerating ions from our Pelletron accelerator upto mass A=100. The resonators operate at 97 MHz and optimized for particle beta,(v/c)=0.08. Resonators are fabricated entirely of niobium and are jacketed in a stainless steel vessel which contains the liquid helium.

Initial resonators required for the first linac module were fabricated at ANL. For the fabrication of remaining resonators required a Superconducting Resonator Fabrication Facility has been set up at IUAC under the project Indigenous Fabrication of Resonators (Project IFR). All the required facilities eg. Electron Beam Welding Machine, Surface Preparation Laboratory and High Vacuum Furnace are fully functional.
